Lockdown Activities 2021 - Photo Competition

Ken Behrens were put into lockdown at 5:00pm on Thursday, 12 August 2021. Stay-at-home rules have meant we've had to be creative about how we keep ourselves entertained. This  photo gallery is a collection of the interesting ways the staff and students of the Medical School have kept themselves busy after work.

If you're a student or staff and have an interesting activity to share, please send your photos to director.medicalschool@anu.edu.au for inclusion in this photo competition. The winner will be decided by voting.

  • It all started with a lockdown. Photo: Robert Schmidli

  • Tim Borough organised a virtual camp out with friends. Using Zoom as their means to communicate, eight families set-up a camp ground in their backyard (fire pits included). A lockdown isn't going to ruin their fun.

  • Claire Wardle hopes these cuties bring a smile to your face. Crocheted over a two week period this cuddly sheep and zippy zebra are the perfect lockdown pets....no maintenance required.

  • This adorable boy may look like a stuffed toy but we promise he is very real. Fred the Groodle (cross Golden Retriever and Poodle) is the perfect companion for Zsofia Erdos. Looking extra cute (and a little unimpressed) in his lockdown jumper.

  • Rural stream medical students based in Bega know their adopted home town is worth recognising and celebrating (even in lockdown) with yummy treats.

  • Nick Taylor #ontrend2021

  • Pretty in blush pink. This creation by Wendy Dimond was completed over a month. It is knitted from baby merino wool and took 10 balls of wool to make. "It’s a gift for my new niece who I hope to meet when we can finally go back to New Zealand."

  • May Erlinger is partial to brains and a fan of embroidery. "I’d like to think it’s preparing me for suturing!"

  • Robert Schmidli is using his exercise time to enjoy Canberra's stunning landscape on his moutain bike.

  • Triplets born on the first day of spring at Di Whiteman's farm.

  • Lyndall Thorn and her sister have been cross stitching funny sayings and interesting images. Some will be Christmas gifts and some will go on sale at the Christmas Geek Markets.

  • Natalie Gordon is using fabrics with Indigenous designs to make a quilt for a friend. "We often live lives that are check-listed and boxed into an easy routine. This quilt challenges the viewer to see all the colours and patterns, beyond the box of our lives and invites us to consider deeper realities."

  • An embroidery hoop in progress....'Desert skies' by Natsha Polzin.

  • A baby bonnet made with fine cotton by Hayley Piggott.

  • Christina Vett, who is participating in the Step-tember Walking Challenge, found this little treasure during one of her walks at Mt Rogers. "The kids made a village of these on the mountain in lock down 1, and new houses are popping up during this lockdown, door included."

  • Tim Borough has enjoyed sitting by the campfire (out the back of his house) with a beer in hand, taking artistic photos.

  •  It seems May Erlinger can’t stop embroidering in her down time. She calls this piece "Dr Cuterus".

  • Hayley Piggott has enjoyed spending time in her colourful garden, especially because Spring has sprung. Taken on a Nikon D7200 with a 100mm lens.

  • This puff quilt with cute koalas and floppy eared rabbits created by Natasha Polzin will make a welcome addition to any bed during the colder nights in Canberra.

  •  Doily created with cotton crochet thread by Hayley Piggott. "I gifted it to the lady I was nannying for prior to COVID. It brightened her day."

  • Dipti Talaulikar has been busy moving tonnes of rocks to create this impressive water feature in her backyard.

  • Hayley Piggott is one of 36 Medical School participants competing in a Step-tember walking challenge, so when she's not crocheting (or studying) she's out in nature catching some rays.

  • Julia Legge, another Step-tember walking challenge particpant, spotted this Foriade tulip displays on one of her walks.

  • These hand made prayer flags are to celebrate the Spring equinox - by Katrina Anderson.

  • Jane Dahlstrom enjoyed a COVID safe Spring walk with her friend who has metastatic cancer.

  • Meredith Cheng entered the CAN GIVE DAY Singing Competition to raise funds for the Canberra Hospital Foundation, composing an original piece for the competition. Read more
