Kathryn's Story
Kathryn was born in Tipperary, Ireland, the younger of two sisters. Her family ran a country pub with a farm. Kathryn trained as a paediatric nurse in England before migrating to Australia where she met her husband, Michael. While raising a family of two boys, Kathryn went to university, obtained a PhD and became health policy researcher at Flinders University, where she had several Aboriginal colleagues. Kathryn was a kind, thoughtful and intelligent person who always cared for others more than herself. Kathryn had a lifelong interest in social justice issues, including the self-determination of Aboriginal peoples. She suggested the establishment of a scholarship to help Aboriginal medical students in their early years. Tragically, Kathryn died suddenly in 2020, with so much more to do. Michael has established the Kathryn Browne-Yung Scholarship Fund to fund the scholarships Kathryn had proposed. While it remains a work in progress, he has been raising funds with the aim of making the Scholarship fund self-sustaining. The board members of the Scholarship fund are Michael, his sister Alison, Simon Gipson OAM and Kathryn’s friend and colleague, Tamara Mackean. Tamara is a Waljen woman whose traditional Country is in the north east Goldfields of WA, and she is a life member of the Australian Indigenous Doctors’ Association (AIDA). The purpose of the Kathryn Browne-Yung Scholarship fund is to provide an annual scholarship to a first year Aboriginal medical student to enable them to concentrate on their studies. Initially this will be $5000 to one student but the aim is to increase the amount and/or number of scholarships over time. All donations are tax deductible. ACN 653278221
So far we have done a bike ride from Melbourne to Adelaide in March 2022 and two quiz nights in 2022 and 2023 to raise funds.
We are delighted to announce that the inaugural winner of the Kathryn Browne-Yung scholarship is Madelyn Johnson. Madelyn is a proud Gomeroi woman from Moree, which is on Gamilaraay land. Madelyn is studying medicine in Orange, NSW. Madelyn would like to work back on country and has a special interest in women’s health and obstetrics. We wish Madelyn all the best in her studies, and her future as a doctor.

Applications
Applications for the 2024 scholarship open on January 1st 2024 and close11:59pm ACST, 31st March 2024 – no late applications can be accepted. All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application by April 30th 2024. Please send your application to kbyfoundation@outlook.com.
Eligibility criteria
Applications will be considered from applicants who are:
· Australian citizens
· Are in the first year of medicine in an Australian medical school
· Full student members of the Australian Indigenous Doctors Association (AIDA)

Selection criteria
The scholarship will be awarded on the recommendation of the independent selection committee whose assessment will be based on how applicants address the following questions:
· Describe why you wish to pursue a career in medicine.
· Discuss what you hope to accomplish as a doctor in the next 5 years.
· Are there any special circumstances that need to be considered? (E.g. parenting and/or caring responsibilities)
The scholarship was established in memory of Kathryn whose commitment to improving indigenous health inspired its establishment.
Value of scholarship
The scholarship is paid as a single lump sum of $5000 in May 2024 to the successful applicant’s nominated bank account.
