About

The endocrinology and diabetes researchers are involved in investigator-led and pharmaceutical industry-sponsored clinical research as well as in a very active basic research laboratory. We are currently conducting research into how the insulin producing cells of the pancreas either adapt to chronic nutrient overload or fail to adapt, leading to diabetes.

We are particularly interested in the influence of maternal health during pregnancy on diabetes risk. We are also conducting research into possible susceptibility factors in the development of Type 1 diabetes.

Other projects currently underway range from studies of placental function in obese and diabetic pregnancy through to new medications in clinical trials. There is a strong focus in research training of medical students and postgraduate research students.
