Get to know...Nicole Vargas
Before joining ANU...
I was in a Post Doctoral Research Position at The University of Sydney where I investigated physiological determinants of health related to heat stress and extreme heat events, in particular, the role that different cooling strategies can have on mitigating physiological heat strain in vulnerable populations who do not have access to air conditioning, and for improving exercise tolerance and capacity in people with Multiple Sclerosis who experience heat sensitivity.
My role at ANU is...
Lecturer in Exercise Physiology, where I hope to bring my knowledge of integrative physiology and exercise as medicine and disease prevention to improve educational outcomes for current medical students and our future GPs. I also hope to continue doing high impact research, especially focused on whether particular populations are more vulnerable to heat stress due to an attenuated behavioural heat-loss capacity.
The top three things on my to do list today are...
- Get up and move my body, always a priority in my day.
- Get familiar with ANU blocks/classes and what courses I will be teaching into.
- Work on a collaborative paper we are writing about current heat-health advice across Australian State and Territory Governments and how they could be improved.
The most adventurous thing I've ever done...
For my 18th birthday, my dad and I went sky diving together. I don’t know that you could convince me to do it again!
A famous person I'd like to have dinner with...
Gloria Steinem.. because 50-60 years later, women are still fighting for their rights and we need all the secrets we can get to keep the fire burning.
Something new I want to learn this year...
More about Indigenous health, science and healing and ways that indigenous and western practices can complement one another.
A new skill I'd love to learn in an instant...
How to use R. I think this would come in so handy for current and future research endeavours, it’s just hard to find the time to do it!
