Cowra – the great escape

Cowra's wine industry is now internationally recognised, especially the award-winning chardonnay. The annual Cowra Wine Show in July is the third largest in the country.

Kendal Street Medical Services

Kendal Street Medical Services was established in 1990 following the amalgamation of three existing medical practices in Cowra. The practice has had a strong educational focus and has hosted medical students and GP registrars since it has been established. The doctors who work with Kendal Street Medical Centre are committed to training medical students, PGPPP residents and GP registrars and undertake regular teacher training and professional development.

Cowra District Hospital

Cowra Health Service services a population of over 13,500. Population comprises rural, semi-rural and light industry. The Cowra district has a high rate of unemployment, large ageing population, young families and the largest Aboriginal population in the former mid-Western Health District.

Major trauma and patients requiring specialist treatment are generally transported to the main referral centres of Orange [95kms], Bathurst [110kms] and Canberra [200kms]. Transport is fixed wing, helicopter or road.

Cowra Health Service is a 34 bed facility that provides both acute and community based services. These include: 3 bed emergency department, 24 bed medical/surgical/paediatric/palliative care ward, 6 bed maternity unit, 4 bed high dependency unit, 2 operating theatres, 4 chair day surgery unit, 2 bed recovery unit, 3 chair chemotherapy day unit, community based services, pharmacy, Outreach Canowindra and Grenfell, medical imaging, pathology.

Other services available through Cowra District Hospital include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, child health care, adult and child dental clinic, dietetic, family counselling, alcohol/drug, obstetrics, occupational therapy, paediatric, palliative care, physiotherapy, psychology, sexual assault counselling, social work, speech pathology, women’s health nurse. The Cowra Community Health Team, located at Cowra Hospital, 3rd Floor include:

Chemotherapy unit (level 2), social work, psychology, diabetes education, dietetics, healthy lifestyles program – exercise and educational programs for the management of heart disease, respiratory and chronic illnesses, child and family health, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, sexual assault counsellor, speech pathology, women’s health, district nursing, community nurse.

Local GP's in the town are also employed as VMO's and participate in an on-call roster system to provide emergency coverage. Three local GP's are credentialed for obstetrics and three GP's credentialed for anaesthetics (one has paediatric anaesthetic approval).
