Medical Electives – Australian Students

Please read all the information carefully. All of this information is current and correct. When applying for an elective with the School of Clinical Medicine. Please ensure that you send all the correct information. Elective placements cannot commence until all the relevant documents are received by the Electives Officer.

Postal Details

1. Placements – Who Can Apply?

Due to the high demand for elective placements, the School will only accept applications from medical undergraduate students who will be in their final year at the time of the elective placement.

 

2. How Long Can I Stay?

The maximum time offered is 8 weeks . If desired and your time permits, it may be possible to split the elective period and spend time attached to 2 different departments for 4 weeks each.

 

3. Can I Obtain Formal Credit for the Elective?

An elective is an opportunity to broaden a student’s clinical experience and no formal credit or assessment will be given for the elective.

 

4. What are the Costs?

All costs incurred, including travel and accommodation, are wholly your responsibility.

There is a $100.00 application fee, which must be sent at the time you submit your application. This fee is nonrefundable.

5. What Departments are Available?

Placements are available (depending on availability) in the following areas:

Accident & Emergency Medical Imaging / Radiology
Anaesthesia Neurology
Cardiology Neurosurgery
Endocrinology Obstetrics & Gynaecology
Gastroenterology Oncology
General Surgery Paediatrics and Paediatric Surgery
Geriatrics and Aged Care Palliative Care
Haematology Plastic Surgery
Immunology Psychological Medicine
Infectious Diseases Renal Medicine
Intensive Care Unit Shock / Trauma Unit
Medical Administration Thoracic Medicine
 

Please note that although placements are available in December and January, there are no academic activities at the School of Clinical Medicine or within its teaching hospitals during that period, due to student vacation time and Christmas/New Year summer holidays when many wards and departments are downgraded, outpatient clinics closed or minimised and surgical sessions limited.

 

6. When Do I Apply?

Due to the limited number of places available, it is advised that submit your application no later than six months before your intended placement commencement.

 

7. How Do I Apply?

Submit an Application Form  [pdf] and Prohibited Employment Declaration [pdf] . Please ensure you complete all sections carefully to ensure that your application can be timely processed.

 

8. What Else Do I Need to Know?

Insurance

The ANU Medical School does not provide insurance cover for medical indemnity for elective students. Before commencement of your elective you will need to provide written proof from your University or other appropriate body that you are covered by insurance for public and professional liability of AUD $20 million, including medical malpractice, whilst doing your elective.


Criminal Record Check

All students are required to submit a Criminal Record Check (CRC). The CRC must be dated within the 12 months prior to commencement of your elective placement. The CRC is not required upon application but must be submitted at least 2 months prior to commencement of your elective placement. A CRC is required from the Australian Federal Police and any country where you have been domiciled for more than 12 months since the age of 18.


Infectious Diseases / Immunisation

Students are required to comply with the ANU Medical School policy on infectious diseases and immunisation. The policy can be read at: ANU Medical School Admissions page – select ‘Infectious Diseases Policy’ from the 'Policies and Forms' index box on the lefthand side of the webpage.

Students should complete a Vaccination Declaration Form [pdf] and submit this with the application.


Accommodation

Accommodation may be available onsite but cannot be guaranteed. The current rate for students is $6.00 per night. If onsite accommodation is not available, there are a range of alternative lowcost accommodation facilities relatively close to the teaching hospitals.

 

9. What Do I Do Next?

Post originals (or certified copies) of all the documents listed below to the Electives Officer at the Clinical School.

  • School of Clinical Medicine Application Form and Prohibited Employment Declaration
  • Vaccination Declaration Form
  • Letter of good standing from your Faculty – this is to confirm your status as a medical student in the final or penultimate year of studies.
  • A copy of your curriculum vitae
  • $100.00 application fee
  • Passport photograph endorsed by your faculty representative
