Clinical Teaching Capacity

The exposure of students to clinical science and skills commences from the first week of Year 1. The students spend one day a week in the health sector in Years 1 and 2. Virtually all of Years 3 and 4 are in the health sector, in clinical clerkships rotations of four or more weeks duration.

The School has secured sufficient clinical teaching facilities within Canberra and in the southeast NSW region. The Canberra Hospital is the principle teaching hospital. Its facilities are complemented by those of Calvary Public Hospital and other hospitals including John James Memorial Hospital, National Capital Private Hospital, Calvary Private Hospital and Canberra Eye Hospital. Community based general practices throughout Canberra are widely used.

With strong support and commitment from the Greater Southern Area Health Service (GSAHS), clinical teaching is also be carried out at a number of rural clinical settings in South East NSW rural area. This is a significant asset for the rural program, which is seen as an important feature of the ANU Medical School.

In addition, the School has negotiated in principle agreements for access to other government facilities: Canberra Area Medical Unit (Department of Defence), NSW Corrections Health Service and ACT Community Care.
