Assessment and Evaluation

Assessment drives learning and is designed to measure student performance against learning objectives, to promote self-assessment, to value skills supporting life-long learning, and to determine fitness to practice. Assessment for each block reflects the breadth of content and learning settings for that block and focus on examination of essential concepts and principles. We have included a mixture of programmed formative and summative assessment supported by ongoing formative assessments.

The Medical School reviews assessment tools on an ongoing basis, based on evaluation feedback and in consultation with academic teaching staff and students.

Evaluation includes feedback on course materials, other teaching resources, student experiences, infrastructure, and learning outcomes at all stages of the course. Weekly and end of block evaluation will be obtained from students and staff both as individuals and as groups.

Alternative evaluations methods such as focus groups, assignments and/or tasks that ask students to reflect on their learning and evaluate a given learning experience, are used. While such methods should not be overused as they can be time consuming and/or expensive, they can provide a depth and richness of feedback that may not be available from weekly and block evaluations.
