Admission to the Rural Stream

The Rural Stream Program (School of General Practice, Rural & Indigenous Health) provides opportunities for students in their third year of the course to:

  • study medicine in a challenging and stimulating enviornment
  • experience the diversity of education in rural health and medical practice
  • expand their cultural and medical experience and learn about a different lifestyle
  • make a contribution to the health and lifestyles of rural communities
Of the students who gain entry to the Rural Stream, about half are selected at the time of admission to the ANU Medical School.  Students accepted to this program spend their third year of study in either Goulburn, Bega, Cooma, Young or the Eurobodalla.  The remaining highly contested places are finalised in Year 2 of the course.

To be eligible for the Rural Stream applicants MUST:
  • select the ANU Medical School as their first preference
  • indicate their interest in the Rural Stream when filing their application for graduate medical school with ACER. The application to ACER must also include a 2-page autobiographical statement outlining the reasons why they should be selected to the Rural Stream Program.
  • meet GPA and GAMSAT requirements to the ANU Medical School in that particular year.
Selection for the Rural Stream is based on the autobiographical statement and a separate Rural Stream interview.  This is usually conducted on the same day as the ANU Medical School selection interviews.

An autobiographical statement that includes a reason as to why the applicant should be selected into the Rural Stream must be supplied with the application to ACER.

Applicants will be considered on the basis of their GPA, GAMSAT score, autobiographical statement and interview, the latter containing questions concerning rural life.
